Villanova, Pa. – Drexel Head Coach Denise Zelenak earned her 100th career coaching victory as the Dragons' defeated Villanova, 3-1. The win upped Drexel's record to a perfect 4-0, while the Wildcats dipped to 3-2 on the season.
For the third time this season, Drexel's opponent opened the scoring. Villanova's Emily Donaldson scored just 7:03 into the game to give the Wildcats the lead. The score remained 1-0 until the second half when Drexel made the most of its first penalty corner of the game. Senior Heather Bloemker (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks East) rocketed a shot past Villanova goalie Alex Whalen. Assists were awarded to Emily Horvat (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) and Casey Mouser (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) on the equalizer. Drexel took the lead for good on another penalty corner as freshman Carolina Gibernau (Montevideo, Uruguay/Universidad de la Republica) gathered the rebound off another Bloemker penalty corner shot and deposited it in the back of the cage.
Catherine Chiara (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) would add an insurance goal on a breakaway with less than five minutes remaining to seal the victory. The sophomore forward leads the team in scoring and has recorded at least one goal in each of the Dragons' four games.
Sophomore goalie Colleen McAndrew (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) made 10 saves for Drexel in goal while Whalen made nine for the Wildcats. Drexel was awarded seven penalty corners to Villanova's four, though the Wildcats outshot Drexel 17-14 for the game.
Drexel returns to action on Sept. 10 when the Dragons will travel to face Fairfield at noon.
